What’s the Deal with a Rubber Belt in Oil?

Unlike traditional timing belts that run externally, the Ford 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine uses a wet belt system, where the belt operates inside the engine, lubricated by oil.

Ford recommends replacing the wet belt every 10 years or 150,000 miles. However, we’ve seen many belts fail earlier due to poor maintenance, infrequent servicing, or the use of incorrect oils. To avoid costly damage, we advise replacing the belt at around 8 years or 80,000 miles. If the wet belt fails, it often results in catastrophic engine damage, potentially requiring a full engine replacement.

The 1.0 EcoBoost engine was first introduced to the UK market in 2012 and is now due — or overdue — for wet belt replacement. This engine powers several popular Ford models, including the Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, Ford Transit Connect Van, and Ford B-Max.

Is Wet Belt Replacement a Big Job?

Yes, replacing the wet belt is a complex and time-consuming task. The engine must be stripped down from the top, side, and bottom to access both the wet belt and the oil pump belt. Precision is critical, requiring the use of specialised timing tools. We usually require your vehicle for 2 days when replacing the wet belt.

Essential tools include a torque multiplier to correctly tighten the crank bolt, a flywheel locking plate to secure the crankshaft, and a timing kit to ensure the camshafts are perfectly aligned. Our team has the experience and equipment to perform this intricate work to the highest standard, giving you peace of mind that your engine is in safe hands.
